Box Score 2 ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Marian University women's volleyball (2-12, 0-1 NACC) closed out the Augustana Tournament falling to Augustana and Monmouth in straight sets.
Augustana was able to take advantage of the youth of the Sabres and cruise to identical 25-12 set wins in the opening two sets. The Sabres bounced back in the third, however, as they were able to take an early lead against the Vikings. Augustana rallied late in the set to clinch the sweep with a 25-21 set score.
Senior Catelyn Brehm and junior Katy Funkhouser each had seven kills to lead the offense, while freshman Jenna Skroski led the back row with 11 digs.
The second match of the day was much tighter but quick starts from Monmouth ultimately sank the Sabres. Marian trailed 20-14 in the opening set before using a 9-4 lead to cut the deficit down to 24-23. A Monmouth timeout proved to be the difference, however, as the Scots clinched the set the next point.
The second and third sets were also similar as Monmouth used 6-0 runs in both sets to build a sizeable lead and cruise to the sweep.
Funkhouser continued her strong day leading the Sabres with eight kills just ahead of freshman Erika Horstman who had seven kills with a .217 hitting percentage. Skroski once again led the back row with a match-high 14 digs, while junior Amber Baker had double-digit digs as well with 13. Baker also assisted on 27 of the 35 Marian kills for her third double-double of the weekend.
Baker was also able to earn All-Tournament recognition with weekend totals of 132 assists, 9.43 assists per set, and 48 digs.
Marian returns home when they host MSOE Wednesday, Sept. 21 for a 7 p.m. first serve.
