Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Senior Gustavo Carmona and junior Alonso Fragoso each netted a pair of goals and the Marian University men's soccer team opened Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a convincing 5-1 victory over Concordia Chicago.
The Sabres wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard.
At 5:36 in the first half Eric Rodriguez found Carmona on a long ball inside the box and the Waukegan, Ill. native fired it past the goalkeeper to give the Blue and White a lead it wouldn't relinquish. At 35:35 Carmona added his second goal, this time connecting on a shot from 20 yards out and the Sabres went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
CUC (2-4, 0-1) scored five minutes into the second half, however, the Sabres (3-3, 1-0 NACC) countered a minute later when Fragoso converted a penalty kick.
MU shut the door for good in the waning moments. At 84:12 Rodriguez lobbed a pass to Fragoso and he beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to tally his fourth goal of the season.
Just a minute later Rodriguez delivered his third assist of the game, this time Tanner Pagendam was the beneficiary.
The Sabres return to action Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and play host to Ripon.
