FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (10-7-1, 8-5-0 NCHA) opened a home-and-home series with Lake Forest defeating the Foresters 2-1.

Junior Derek Thorogood opened the scoring when he took a pass from freshman Chris Deprez at the top of the left circle and went past the glove of LFC goalie George Argiropoulos at the 13:08 mark of the first period.  Senior Derek Perl also assisted the play, while the assist from Deprez marked his first collegiate point.

The Sabres and Foresters continued to skate evenly when the potent LFC power play unit struck at the 17:21 mark of the second period to knot the game at 1-1.

The third period also opened with the two teams playing square.  Marian would be unable to find the back of the net off a Lake Forest five-minute major but did light the lamp shortly after.

Perl forced a turnover in the LFC zone and sent from the left circle that went past the blocker of Argiropoulos to put Marian up 2-1 with just over three minutes remaining.

Lake Forest would opt to pull their goalie for the final 2:02 but were unable to force overtime as the Sabres were able to hold on to the 2-1 victory.

Shots for the game finished at an even 29-29 with the Sabres outshooting LFC in the first and second periods.  Senior Mike Baldwin (9-4-1) only allowed one goal for the third consecutive game stopping 28 of the shots he faced to earn the win between the pipes.

Marian travels to Lake Forest tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 21, to close out their series with the Foresters at 7 p.m.
