Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Marian University men's hockey (10-8-1, 8-6-0 NCHA) led 3-1 after one period but three unanswered goals from LFC led the Foresters to a series split with the Sabres with a 4-3 final.
The Foresters needed only 1:45 of the game to take the first lead of the game but the Sabres managed to finish the first period strong. Sophomore Gianni Mangone opened the scoring for Marian on the power play at the 10:37 mark for his seventh goal of the year with assists from senior Derek Perl and freshman Brock Weston.
Then a little over five minutes later the Sabres took their first lead when senior Travis Meyer lit the lamp for the first time this season with assists from freshman Clay Cross and Derek Thorogood. Marian netted their second power-play goal of the period with just under two minutes left in the period with Hunter Stewart finding the back of the net for the fourth time this season, assists to Perl and Weston.
Marian dominated the first period outshooting the Foresters 20-13, but LFC returned the favor outshooting MU 17-8 in the second period and scoring three unanswered, one on the power play, to retake the lead.
The Sabres would rally late in the third period with MU opting for an extra attacker the final 1:46 of the game but were unable to sneak a puck in leading to the 4-3 final.
The Marian power play found a groove going 2-4 (.500) for the game with a man-advantage despite being outshot 38-37. Senior Mike Baldwin (9-5-1) took the loss in goal for the Sabres making 34 saves.
Marian hits the road to open a home-and-home series against MSOE Friday, Jan. 27 with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
