Box Score MILWAUKEE - Marian University men's hockey (10-9-1, 8-7-0 NCHA) scored first but couldn't hold on as they fell to MSOE 3-1 on the road to open a home-and-home series.
After a scoreless first period where Marian oushot the Raiders 10-7, junior Derek Thorogood lit the lamp for the seventh time this season to start the scoring at the 2:19 mark of the second period. Thorogood was assisted by senior Scott Milnthorp and sophomore Jake Howie as the Sabres took the early lead.
The Raiders responded, however, scoring a pair of goals separated by only 2:25 later in the period to take their first lead of the game heading into the final period. MSOE would outshoot the Sabres 11-7 in the period.
MSOE then needed only 52-seconds of the third period to net a power play goal to extend their lead out to 3-1, a deficit the Sabres would be unable to cut into.
MU finished the game with a 30-23 shot advantage, but struggled on the power play going scoreless on seven opportunities. Senior Mike Baldwin (9-6-1) took the loss in net stopping 20 shots, while senior Brodie Jamieson went 12-19 in the faceoff circle.
Marian hosts MSOE tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. to close out the series.
