Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (11-9-1, 9-7-0) snapped a two-game skid with a 4-3 win over MSOE at Blue Line.
The Sabres were able to jump out early when junior Derek Thorogood lit the lamp for the eighth time this season at the 9:03 mark. Sophomores Nick Monfils and Gianni Mangone earned assists on the goal, which gave the Sabres an early lead.
Both special teams then came to play as the next four goals in the game came on the power play.
Senior Brodie Jamieson extended the lead with his third goal of the season, assists to senior Scott Milnthorp and sophomore Jake Howie, as Marian headed into the first intermission ahead 2-0.
Marian was able to outshoot MSOE 15-9 as they jumped out to a fast start. MSOE was able to rebound in the second period, however, outshooting the Sabres 14-8 in the period. The Raiders would net the first goal of the second period before junior Curtis Lewington found the back of the net for the sixth time this year at the 11:29 mark. Junior Cole McCaig and sophomore James Mathias assisted the goal as Marian extended their goal out to 3-1.
The Raiders finished the period strong, however, netting a pair of goals in the final two minutes to send the teams into the second intermission knotted at 3-3.
The Sabres then put together a strong third period highlighted by a goal from Monfils, his seventh goal of the year, at the 6:31 mark that proved to be the game-winner.
The Marian power play unit bounced back after a rough night to go 2-4 tonight. A total of 13 different Sabres recorded a shot in the win, while Thorogood went 8-11 in the faceoff circle.
Senior Mike Baldwin improved to 10-6-1 with a 25-save performance where two of the goals he allowed came while MU was on the penalty kill.
Marian opens a home series with Finlandia Saturday, Feb. 4, which will also serve as Senior Night, with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
