Sabre volleyball splits trip to Madison

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MADISON, Wis. - Marian University women's volleyball (9-14, 3-7 NACC) fell to Edgewood in four sets in NACC play before defeating North Central (Minn.) to close out the weekend.

In the opener against Edgewood, the Eagle offense controlled the opening set as they cruised to a 25-17 win.  Marian bounced back in the second set opening with an 8-3 run.  The Eagles would rally but at the end of the set it was MU who continued to hold the upper hand.  Edgewood held off on a pair of set point opportunities for the Sabres but the third time proved to be the charm as freshman Jenna Moehn clinched the 27-25 set win with a service ace.

From there, however, the Edgewood offense took over as the Eagles won the third set 25-18 and the fourth set 25-20.  Freshman Cheyenne Henson led the offense with a team-high 14 kills, while junior Alexandra Meidl added nine kills with a .368 hitting percentage.  At the net, freshman Jamie Schrauth and Kaitlyn Kelley each had four block assists.

The second match of the day was all the Sabres as Marian was able to sweep North Central (Minn.) with set scores of 25-20, 27-25 and 25-14.

After taking an early 10-6 lead in the opener, Marian scored the next nine points to take a commanding 19-6 advantage.  The second set saw North Central take a 13-10 lead, which they were able to expand upon with a quick 5-0 run.  Marian rallied following a timeout cutting the lead down to one with a 9-2 run.  The Rams still had a set point opportunity but a kill from Henson kept the set alive.  The Sabres were eventually able to cap off the come back with kills form Moehn and Meidl at 27-25.

The third set was once again all MU as the Sabres jumped out to a 12-6 lead to start and a 6-0 run later in the set gave the Sabres an 18-9 advantage.  Marian was able to then cruise to the 25-14 win clinching a sweep.

Meidl continued her strong offensive play with a match-high 11 kills to go with a .733 hitting percentage.  Sophomore Jenna Skroski led the back row with a match-high 11 digs, while Henson had seven kills, 11 digs, and three block assists.

Marian opens the final week of the season Tuesday, Oct. 24 when the Sabres host Lakeland at 7 p.m. in NACC action.
