Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (15-9-2, 12-7-1 NCHA) defeated Lake Forest 5-2 to advance to the NCHA Harris Cup semifinal.
The Sabres opened the game fast scoring a pair of goals in the first 2:27 of the game. Sophomore Gianni Mangone netted his 10th goal of the year with an assist to senior Derek Perl at the 1:22 mark before senior Travis Meyer lit the lamp 1:05 later with an assist to junior Hunter Stewart.
Marian opened the game with a 13-9 shot advantage in the first period.
The Marian power play then extended the lead when senior Brodie Jamieson scored his seventh goal of the year with assists to sophomore Nick Monfils and junior Derek Thorogood.
The Forester power play then answered at the 8:06 mark and the Foresters were able to cut the deficit down to one at the 18:02 mark. Lake Forest was able to respond after the slow start outshooting the Sabres 13-7 for the second period.
MU then played strong defensively in the final period holding Lake Forest to only five shots on goal. Thorogood was able to give the Sabres extra cushion with only 1:54 remaining in the game, assist to Meyer, before Jamieson closed out the game with an empty-netter, his second goal of the game, with assists to sophomore Jake Howie and Mangone.
Senior Mike Baldwin (13-6-2) earned the win in goal for the Sabres making 25 saves on the night.
Marian will travel to No. 4/5 Adrian Saturday, Feb. 25 for a 1 p.m. (CST) puck drop in the NCHA Harris Cup semifinals.
