Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The series opener between Marian University men's hockey (12-9-1, 10-7-0 NCHA) and Finlandia was all MU as the Sabres defeated Finlandia 5-1.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening period but the Sabres controlled most of the action with a 13-4 shots advantage.
Senior Brodie Jamieson opened the scoring at the 5:38 mark tipping in a goal off the power play with assists to senior Scott Milnthorp and sophomore Jake Howie. The goal was number four on the year for Jamieson. Howie then found the back of the net for the sixth time this season just under two minutes later with assists to junior Derek Thorogood and senior Mike Zajac.
Marian continued to pour it on as senior Travis Meyer lit the lamp for the second time this season at the 10:12 mark with assists to freshman Connor Martin and Thorogood.
The Lions responded with a power-play goal at the 15:21 mark but Finlandia would be outshot 11-6 for the period.
In the third period, sophomore James Mathias lit the lamp twice with freshman Clay Cross assisting both goals and senior Derek Perl adding an assist on the second goal. The goals were number two and three on the year for Mathias and sealed the 5-1 Marian win.
The Sabres finished the game with a 34-17 shots advantage led by Howie who sent four shots to the net.
Senior Mike Baldwin (11-6-1) took the win between the pipes for Marian with 16 saves.
Marian closes out the series with Finlandia tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 4, with a 4 p.m. puck drop.
