Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's volleyball (8-17, 5-13 MCVL) fell to Fontbonne in straight sets with set scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 30-28.
After Marian jumped out to an early 8-5 lead to open the match, Fontbonne used an 8-2 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Sabres would keep pace with the Griffins throughout the set but were unable to cut into the deficit.
Sophomore Cullen Liberski opened the match in a big way recording 11 digs.
The Sabres would hit .235 in the second set but a similar run from Fontbonne allowed the Griffins to take a 2-0 lead. The Sabres led the set 10-7 before Fontbonne used a 9-2 run to take a 16-12 lead that they held to the end of the set.
The third set was a tight battle that saw neither team grow their lead larger than two points. At the end of the set it was Fontbonne who was able to stave off a Marian set point opportunity and score four of the final five points to secure the straight sets win.
The Sabres would outkill the Griffins 41-40 for the match but Fontbonne was able to hit slightly more efficiently in the win.
Liberski led the way in the back row with a match-high 21 digs, while sophomore Jon Smallpage paced the offense with a match-high 15 kills followed closely by junior Aaron Wendels who recorded 14 kills.
Marian closes out the season at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, April 8, when the Sabres host Adrian.
