Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University softball (15-7, 3-3 NACC) split with Dominican defeating the Stars in game one 3-1 before falling in 15 innings in game two by a 2-0 final.
The Sabres were only to scratch out three hits but made the most of their opportunities in game one.
The Sabres were on the board first after a two-out DU error extended the inning. Sophomore Lindsey Strainis opened the scoring with a single through the right side that plated fellow sophomore Rachel Soch.
The Stars answered in the top of the sixth with a one-out single to knot the game at 1-1 but the tie wouldn't last long. The inning opened with a pair of walks before senior Nicole LaBeck stepped in and drove a double to right field with two outs to plate freshman Gianna Esposito and Strainis.
Senior Shannon Huray worked around an error in the top of the seventh to close out the MU win and improve to 8-5 on the year. Huray would scatter five hits in the win, while striking out five Stars.
LaBeck finished with two of the three Sabre hits going 2-3 with her two runs batted in.
The second game was a marathon as neither offense could get anything going. After going 14 innings of scoreless ball. A bunt from Dominican with runners on the corner would allow both runners to score and break the scoreless tie at 2-0. The Sabres would have no answer in the bottom half to set the final at 2-0.
Freshman Paige Rauhut (6-2) took the tough-luck loss only allowing four hits over 15.0 innings of work. Rauhut would finish with 10 strikeouts in the game.
Despite the slow offense, senior Charlotte Pegram would finish 4-5, while senior Sara Terrian also recorded a multi-hit game going 2-6.
Marian returns to Smith Field tomorrow, Sunday, April 9, for a noon doubleheader with Concordia Chicago.
