Sabres fall to Ripon in double overtime thriller

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University women's soccer (2-1-0, 0-0-0 NACC) held the lead at halftime but Ripon was able to rally and force overtime where they netted the game-winner in the second extra frame.

Junior Briana Pawlowski opened the scoring for the game with her second goal of the year when the Ripon keeper mishandled the ball giving Pawlowski an open net.  Her goal came in the 21st minute and was part of a half that saw the Sabres outshot Ripon by a slim 8-6 margin.

The game continued to play evenly with opportunities for both sides.  Ripon's Riley Pennington was able to take advantage of a free kick from 25 yards out to even the score.  Neither side would find the back of the net, as each team sent eight shots towards the net in the half, forcing overtime.

The Sabres had several opportunities on corner kicks all game long, including the last seconds of the first overtime, but were unable to put a tally on the board.  Then with under two minutes remaining in the second overtime, Ripon chipped one deep into the Sabre defense and a lucky bounce set up the Red Hawks for the 2-1 double overtime win.

Marian had a 17-16 advantage on shots for the game led by junior Reilly Louko who had five shots.  Junior Danielle Deltgen (2-1-0) had a career-high five saves in the tough-luck loss.

Marian returns to the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Maranatha Baptist for a 3 p.m. kick off.
