Sabre women's volleyball drops thriller to Concordia Chicago

Box Score

FOND DU LAC - Three of the four sets would be settled by the minimum of two points as Marian University women's volleyball (9-13, 4-7 NACC) fell to Concordia Chicago by set scores of 23-25, 25-21, 27-25, and 25-23.

The two squads were deadlocked throughout the first set leading to an 18-18 tie.  The Sabres then took advantage of a pair of Cougar errors along with kills from senior Alexandra Meidl and junior Sara Komosa to take a 22-19 a lead.  The Cougars battled back to tie the game at 23-23 but a pair of CUC errors would give Marian the opening set.

Four different Sabres were able to record multiple kills in the set.

Concordia Chicago was able to even the sets using a 9-2 run in the middle of the second set to cruise to the victory.  The Sabres were able to rally late, however, and built momentum by scoring five of the final eight points in the set.

The Sabres used the late momentum shift to their advantage in the third using a 6-1 run to take a 22-18 lead.  Concordia Chicago rallied, however, and fought off a pair of Marian set-point opportunities.  The Cougars closed out the set with a 9-3 run.  CUC looked poised to run away with the fourth set leading by as much as six at 20-14.  From there, Marian was able to cut the deficit to as little as one at 23-22 with an 8-3 run, but CUC would put the Sabres away 25-23.

Meidl had a monster night for the Sabres with a match-high 19 kills off of a .486 hitting percentage.  In the fourth set, Meidl would record nine of her kills and hit .529.  Freshman Hannah Walther also had double-digit kills for the second time in the season with 10.

On the defensive end, freshman Brooklyn Taylor had a team-high 14 digs with junior Jenna Skroski adding 12.  Junior Kaitlyn Kelley led the Sabres at the net with five total blocks.

Marian closes out the weekend traveling to Carroll for a noon non-conference match tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 20.
