ANGOLA, Ind. - Marian University men's hockey (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NCHA) opened the 2018-19 season with a 4-2 road victory over Trine.

The Sabre power play unit had a big game in the victory and finished with goals on three of their six power-play opportunities.  After the Thunder took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, senior Jake Howie broke the tie with a power-play goal at the 5:27 mark.  The defenseman pairing of senior Lane Valimont and junior Brock Weston each earned an assist on the play.

Junior Conner Blanck then gave the Sabres their first lead of the game with his own power-play goal 5:01 later.  His linemates, Howie and junior Clay Cross, each earned an assist on the goal.  The Marian lead wouldn't last long, however, as the Thunder scored with just under five minutes remaining to send the teams into the second intermission tied at 2-2.

In the third period, Cross would break the tie for good at the 12:28 with a man-advantage goal, assists to Blanck and Weston.  Valimont was able to ice the game with just 1:17 left with an empty-net goal, assist to Blanck.

The Sabres held a 24-22 advantage in shots for the game with 10 different Sabres recording multiple shots.  Junior Hunter Vorva (1-0-0) led the Sabres in goal with 20 saves and one of his goals allowed being on a Trine 5-on-3 opportunity.

Marian closes out the weekend playing at No. 2 Adrian tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2:05 p.m. (CDT) from Arrington Arena.
