No. 12/13 Marian men's hockey grinds out win over LFC

Box Score

FOND DU LAC - In a defensive battle, No. 12/13 Marian University men's hockey (3-0-0, 3-0-0 NCHA) used a late power play goal to defeat Lake Forest 2-1.

The Sabres were able to strike first when junior Chris Deprez lit the lamp for the first time this season at the 3:42 mark of the first period.  Freshman Nathan Walker and senior Lonnie Clary each assisted the goal for their first points of the year.

The Foresters evened the game nearly four minutes later when they found the back of the net with just seconds remaining on a power play.  The Sabres would need to fight off four minor penalties in the opening period and only allowed the one man-up goal.

Despite spending most of the period on the penalty kill, the Sabres tied the Foresters in shots for the opening stanza at 11-11.  Marian then took control the remainder of the game outshooting Lake Forest 11-4 in the second period.

It wasn't until the 11:32 mark of the third period, however, that the Sabres were able to take the lead for good.  Walker was able to beat the goalie from the left circle while Marian was on a power play for his first career goal and multi-point game.  Junior Clay Cross and his defense partner freshman Salvatore Scalise each assisted the game-winner.

The Sabres finished with a 30-19 advantage in shots with junior Hunter Vorva making 18 saves in goal.  Junior Mitchell Baumann and Cross each had four shots to pace the offense.  From the faceoff circle, senior Jake Howie went 24-8 on draws, while junior Chris Deprez went 8-5.

Marian closes out the weekend taking on Aurora tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. from Blue Line.
