Sabre women's volleyball drops five-setter to Ripon in season finale

Box Score

FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's volleyball (6-20, 3-9 NACC) fell to Ripon in five sets with set scores of 23-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-19, and 15-9 to close out the 2019 season.

The Marian offense had a strong start to the match with 17 kills in the opening set with a .306 hitting percentage.  The Sabres were able to turn an 11-10 deficit into a 16-12 lead with a 6-1 run, which proved to be the difference.  The Red Hawks managed to cut the deficit down to one on three occasions but a kill from junior Sara Komosa sealed the set.  Ripon answered back in set number two using a 9-4 run to close out the set and even the match.

The Sabres responded with another strong offensive performance in the third set recording 12 kills off of a .348 hitting percentage.  The Sabres trailed 7-3 before a timeout changed the momentum of the set.  With sophomore Brooklyn Taylor at the service line, Marian would rattle off 10 straight points and jump ahead 13-7.  Marian was then able to close out the set strong with a 5-1 run that gave the Sabres a 2-1 advantage.

Ripon was able to force a fifth set, however, behind another strong finish in the fourth as the Red Hawks went on an 8-3 spurt to end the set and force the winner-take-all fifth.  Ripon used their momentum from the fourth set to jump out to a 10-3 lead in the fifth, but the Sabres responded cutting the deficit down to four at 11-7.  The Red Hawks were able to battle this momentum switch and closed out the match with a 4-2 run.

Komosa and freshman Monica Dreifuerst each had a double-double in the defeat with Komosa producing a match-high 16 kills and 14 digs, and Dreifuerst 14 kills with 10 digs.  Sophomore Hannah Walther added 10 kills off of a .300 hitting percentage, while Taylor and senior Jenna Skroski each had a match-high 16 digs in the back row.  Senior Amber Yahr had three service aces to go with 33 assists and eight digs.
