Sabre men's hockey settles for split with 1-0 overtime defeat at Aurora

GENEVA, Ill. - Marian University men's hockey (7-4-0, 4-4-0 NCHA) saw a five-game win streak snapped falling at Aurora 1-0 in overtime to close out the first half of the season.

Both goaltenders were dominant between the pipes as the Sabres and Spartans closed out their NCHA series with another defensive battle.  Marian had outshot Aurora in two of the three periods with a 31-29 advantage overall in the category at the end of regulation.  Aurora then outshot Marian 5-4 with their final strike finding the back of the net with just 1:11 left in the extra period. 

Marian closed out the game with a slim 35-34 advantage in shots with junior Dylan Hutton recording a game-high five shots.  In the faceoff circle, senior Lawson MacDonald had a strong game winning 15 of his 22 draws.

Senior Hunter Vorva (5-3-0) suffered the tough-luck defeat making 33 stops with 12 of his saves coming in the third period.

Each team committed one penalty in the game with neither power play unit finding the back of the net.

Marian takes on Bethel at the Superior Showdown, hosted by UW-Superior, Saturday, Dec. 28 at 4:30 p.m. to open the second half of the season.
