FOND DU LAC - All of the scoring came in the first half as Marian University women's soccer (3-4-0, 1-0-0 NACC) opened NACC play with a 3-1 win over Edgewood.

The Sabres didn't need long to get on the board when junior Shannon Coughlin received a through ball from freshman Ashley Welk that found the back of the net just 1:22 into the game.  The goal was her sixth of the season.  Edgewood found their equalizer off of a similar play approximately 10 minutes later to tie the game up.

Freshman Kayla Bender then broke the tie when she sent in a high arcing shot that found the back of the net, her first-career goal, in the 26th minute.  Welk then added a goal with 11.7 seconds remaining when she sent a high shot from the outskirts of the box that snuck under the crossbar, her fifth goal of the year.

The Sabres finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots for the half.

Marian would play a more defensive second half allowing 16 Edgewood shots, but not many were quality opportunities.  Sophomore Kylie Lange would turn away one shot with a big save in the final two minutes that saw her give a diving effort to her right.

In all, Lange (3-4-0) finished with 11 saves on the night with nine of her stops coming in the second half.  Welk paced the offense with a game-high four shots, while Coughlin added three.

Marian closes out the week hosting Benedictine at noon Saturday, Sept. 28 in NACC play.
