Sabre women's hockey settles for split at Northland after 3-1 defeat

ASHLAND, Wis. - Marian University women's hockey (4-12-1, 2-5-1 NCHA) fell behind early and could never recover falling at Northland 3-1.

The LumberJills were able to score 6:48 into the game and added a second goal at the 11:14 mark of the second period to take a 2-0 advantage.  The Sabre offense would put pucks on net but were unable to find the back of the net. 

Marian was finally able to get on the board at the 6:10 mark of the third period with a power-play goal from junior Hannah Koniar.  The goal was her first of the season and she was assisted by senior Morgan Bolin.

The Sabres would have another power-play opportunity late but were unable to find the back of the net before Northland iced the game with an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Marian finished with a 37-30 advantage in shots after outshooting Northland 18-5 in the third period.  Koniar and senior Mary Clark each had a game-high five shots to pace the offense.  Senior Molly Gross (1-4-0) made 27 saves in the defeat with double-digit stops in the first and second period.

Marian returns to NCHA action traveling to St. Norbert for a 7 p.m. puck drop Friday, Jan. 31.
