Box Score MEQUON, Wis. - Marian University men's volleyball (4-5, 0-2 NACC) dropped a five-set match for the first time this season at CUW with set scores of 26-24, 26-28, 25-15, 16-25, and 15-9.
The opening sets were as tight as they can be with both teams needing to go past the minimum to earn a win. The Falcons were able to take the opener before Marian knotted things up in the second. Despite the win in the second, the Falcons were able to hold Marian to a -.156 hitting percentage in the third to take a 2-1 advantage.
Needing a win, the Sabres returned the favor in the fourth set with Marian holding the Falcons to a -.024 hitting percentage leading to a fifth set. CUW was able to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth and then scored five unanswered to go ahead 11-5. This proved to be the difference as the Falcons would take the fifth 15-9.
The Sabres had four double-digit kill performances led by sophomore Jacob Jurney who posted 14 kills. Jurney also finished with 18 digs for his third double-double of the season. Sophomore Carzell Combs led the back row with a match-high 20 digs, while sophomore Zach Zelenik also had a double-double with 40 assists and 12 digs.
Marian travels to Maranatha Baptist Friday, Feb. 21 to take on the Sabercats at 4 p.m. and Greenville immediately after.
