Box Score MADISON, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (4-17, 3-13 NACC) defeated Edgewood 72-71 behind a buzzer beater in the final seconds from junior Justin Wilson.
Marian controlled the action for most of the first half leading by as much as 11 on a pair of occasions. The Eagles were able to battle back at the end of the half and cut their deficit down to 38-31 at the break.
Edgewood was able to use that momentum to score 10 unanswered points to open the second half and take a 41-38 lead with 16:21 to play. Marian responded with an 8-2 run to retake the lead but the game would prove to be back-and-forth for the final 13 minutes. The largest lead in that final stretch proved to be only five points as the game eventually led to a 65-65 draw with 2:11 to play.
The two squads traded the lead before a layup from Wilson gave Marian a 70-69 lead with just 12 ticks left. Edgewood would force a foul and sink both free throws with just six seconds remaining to retake the lead at 71-70. Wilson then took the inbounds coast to coast and hit a fadeaway in the paint as the horn sounded to give Marian the win at 72-71.
Marian finished the game shooting 29-58 (.500) from the field including 9-22 (.409) from beyond the arc. Wilson led the way with a game-high 17 points, while junior DeAndre Ross chipped in 12 points and freshman Sam Greenthal added 10.
Marian returns home to host Dominican Wednesday, Feb. 12 for a 7 p.m. tip-off in NACC action.
