Late rally falls just short as Marian women's hockey falls to CUW 4-3

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. - Marian University women's hockey (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHA) rallied from a pair of three-goal deficits but were narrowly defeated by Concordia Wisconsin 4-3.

It was a slow start for the Sabres as they opened the season against a Concordia Wisconsin squad that had already played three games on the season.  The Falcons were able to take advantage of their power plays in the opening stanza netting three power-play goals.  As a result of the penalty kill being on the ice for five penalties in the first, the Sabres would only manage three shots.

Marian was able to rebound in the second period and netted a power-play goal of their own to open the period just 2:02 in.  The goal came from freshman Hannah Cunha with assists from sophomore McKenna Krosch and senior Hannah Koniar.  The goal cut the Marian deficit down to two and set up a third period that was full of offense.

CUW opened the final period with their fourth power-play tally of the game at the 2:47 mark, but the Sabres were able to rally once again.  Just 44 seconds later, senior Maegan Shuck responded with a power-play goal of her own with assists from freshmen Aeryn Olson and Brynn Weaver.  The Sabres were then able to cut their deficit down to one when Cunha tallied her second goal of the game with just 4:04 left to play, assist to Koniar.

Marian found themselves with a chance to tie the game spending the final 1:18 on the power play and an empty-net in their defensive zone, but the Falcons were able to fight off the power play to secure the victory.  Marian had their best offensive period come in the third sending 14 shots on frame.

Senior Lindsay Lewison (0-1-0) suffered the defeat in goal for the Sabres but tied a career-high stopping 45 shots.  Koniar along with freshman Jenna Grosdidier and sophomore Jade Williams each had a team-best four shots on goal.

The Sabres close out their season-opening series against the Falcons tomorrow, Friday, January 22, at 7 p.m.
