Box Score APPLETON, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (1-0, 0-0 NACC) defeated Lawrence 91-81 to open the season behind a 42-point performance from junior Tyler Gouin.
The first half saw highly-contested action as neither team managed a lead larger than six points. That six-point advantage came after a 38-38 tie when Lawrence hit back-to-back three-pointers. This led the Vikings to a 46-42 advantage at the half. Both squads made at least half of their shots in the opening stanza with Marian going 16-of-32 from the field hitting four of eight three-point attempts.
Lawrence was able to build their lead out to eight points to open the second half before Marian rallied. The Sabres were able to go on a 17-3 run to take their largest lead up until that point at 71-65 with 8:37 left in regulation. Marian would not relinquish this lead the remainder of the game and went 6-of-7 at the charity stripe in the final minute to secure the 10-point win.
The Sabres finished the game going 35-of-67 (.522) from the field with seven three-pointers. Gouin paced Marian with 42 points shooting 16-of-22 (.727) from the field with five rebounds. Senior David Britton chipped in 19 points, while sophomore Delvin Barnstable added 14 points off the bench with a team-high seven rebounds, four of which were on the offensive end.
Marian remains on the road traveling to UW-La Crosse for a 3 p.m. non-conference game Saturday, November 13.
