Box Score MILWAUKEE - Marian University men's volleyball (5-0, 4-0 NACC) defeated No. 15 MSOE with set scores of 33-31, 16-25, 25-20, and 25-16 to stay unbeaten.
The first set proved to be a marathon but the Sabres were able to rally from a slow start. The Raiders were able to jump out to a 15-9 lead but the Sabres were able to slowly chip away at their deficit and tied the set at 21-21. MSOE would have two chances at winning the set when they led 24-22 but Marian was able to keep it alive. After several ties, a block followed by a service from freshman Derek Wills gave the Sabres a 33-31 win.
MSOE was able to rally in the second set using an 8-1 run in the middle of the set to take a 15-7 lead. This time the Raiders were able to hold on and take the set 25-16. Both offenses had strong sets with the Sabres hitting .226 in the set.
The third set opened with a 10-10 tie but the Sabres were able to take the first significant lead of the set with an 11-5 run. MSOE was able to hold off three set-point opportunities but an error at the service line gave Marian a 25-20 win. The final set was tight for most of the way with Marian holding a 17-14 lead. The Sabres closed out the set strong, however, going on an 8-2 run to earn the four-set victory at 25-16.
Wills and junior Jacob Jurney each had a team-best 13 kills to lead the offense with Jurney also adding 10 digs for his first double-double of the season. Fellow junior Carzell Combs had a strong performance recording 20 digs in the back row. It was another strong performance for junior Zach Zelenik who had five kills to go with 30 assists and three service aces.
Marian returns home to take on Wisconsin Lutheran Friday, March 5 for a 7 p.m. first serve in NACC action.
