Box Score FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's volleyball (8-5, 1-1 NACC) won the first set but were defeated by Edgewood in four sets with scores of 24-26, 25-20, 25-14, and 25-23.
Marian opened the match trailing the Eagles 12-10 before using a 7-1 run to open a 17-13 advantage. Edgewood was able to use a 6-1 spurt of their own to retake the lead and brought that advantage out to a set-point opportunity at 24-23. After a timeout and Edgewood service error, Marian rallied using a block and ace from sophomore Kaitlyn Merrill to take the opening set 26-24. Sophomore Reagan Jasica led Marian in the set with five kills.
The Sabres were able to open the second set with a 9-7 lead before Edgewood went on a 12-5 streak to go ahead 19-14. The Sabres managed to cut that deficit down to as little as two, but three consecutive kills from Edgewood gave the Eagles the set. The third set opened in a similar fashion with Edgewood holding a slim 9-8 lead before taking a commanding 19-9 advantage scoring 10 of the next 11 points. The Eagles were then able to cruise to the 2-1 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, Marian put together their best offensive set in the fourth recording 16 kills with only six errors for a .244 hitting percentage. Neither team held a lead larger than four points in the set with a thrilling finish. Edgewood held a 22-20 advantage before two kills from Merrill and a service ace from sophomore Anna Tapia put Marian ahead 23-22. The Eagles were able to bounce back, however, recording three straight kills to end the match in four sets. Merrill hit .500 in the set recording eight kills without an error.
Merrill finished with a match-high 14 kills, while Jasica recorded double-digit kills for the first time in her career with 12. In the back row, senior Brooklyn Taylor recorded at least five digs in each set en route to 27 on the night. Jasica completed a double-double with 12 digs herself.
Marian returns to the road traveling to Aurora for a 7 p.m. first serve Friday, Oct. 1.
