Marian men's hockey bounces back for shootout win over Lawrence

Box Score

FOND DU LAC - Marian University men's hockey (6-7-3, 1-6-2-0 NCHA) defeated Lawrence 2-1 in a shootout after scoring five goals in regulation.

Lawrence was able to find the back of the net first but the Sabres quickly bounced back in the opening period.  Sophomore Nolan Kadachuk would find the back of the net with assists to junior Jack Sampson and senior Taylor Derynck just 1:13 after the Viking goal.  The Vikings would tally one more score in the final five minutes to go up 2-1 after the first.

The second period was dominated by the Sabres with Marian scoring three goals.  Senior Parker Colley tied the game just 51 seconds in to open the scoring with an assist to sophomore Dawson Schwengler.  Another senior in Nathan Walker lit the lamp on the power play at the 10:59 mark, assists to Schwengler and Colley, to give the Sabres their first lead of the game.  Then with just 39 seconds remaining, Kadachuk scored his second of the game, this time with a man-advantage, to put the Sabres up 4-2 heading to the third.  Junior Brady Pupp earned an assist on the goal.

The Sabres once again had a fast start in the third with freshman Nick Cherkowski scoring on a breakaway just two minutes into the period.  Sophomore Austin Nault and Sampson each assisted the goal that pushed the Marina lead to three.  This advantage didn't last long as Lawrence would score just seven seconds later to bring the score to 5-3.  The Vikings then scored two extra-attacker goals in the final 3:44 to force an eventual shootout.

Lawrence converted their first shootout opportunity but junior Colby Muise didn't allow another the rest of the way.  Freshman Jaymes Knee was able to keep Marian alive on their final regulation attempt before Nault found the back of the net as the eighth shooter to earn Marian the extra point.

The Sabres finished with a 42-38 advantage in shots converting two of four power-play opportunities.  Muise (5-7-3) made 33 saves, while Colley had a game-high nine shots on goal.

Marian opens a series with St. Norbert at home Friday, January 21 for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
