Marian women's hockey cruises past Lawrence in series opener

Box Score

APPLETON, Wis. - Marian University women's hockey (5-9-2, 2-3-0-2 NCHA) defeated Lawrence 7-2 in their first NCHA game of the second half.

The Sabres opened the game with a strong opening period that saw three Marian goals.  Freshman Hailie Hefel opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 6:41 mark, assist to fellow freshman Shelby Tryba.  Junior Brooke Anderson then scored back-to-back goals with sophomore Aeryn Olson assisting the first and junior Kristen Bisschop the second.

Marian was then able to push their lead to 5-0 with the first two goals of the second period.  Tryba and Hefel reversed roles from the first power-play goal to score another power-play goal to open the period.  Olson then lit the lamp with assists to sophomore Brenna Abrahamson and Anderson.  A power-play tally from Lawrence put Marian ahead 5-1 heading into the third.  Anderson would finish off a hat trick to open the final stanza, another assist to Bisschop, before Bisschop lit the lamp herself with help from junior McKenna Krosch and freshman Jordan Usiondek.  A Viking goal in the final second of the game then set the final at 7-2.

The Sabres set a season-high for shots with 43 led by seven shots on goal from Anderson.  Sophomore Kayla Kolpitcke (5-9-2) made 31 saves to earn the victory between the pipes for Marian.

Marian hosts the Vikings tomorrow, Saturday, January 22, for a 4 p.m. puck drop to close out the series.
