FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's volleyball (8-23, 4-9 NACC) closed out the season with a 22-25, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-23 win over Lake Forest.
Neither team managed a lead larger than two points in the opening set until the very end. Marian had a 22-21 lead only to have Lake Forest score four unanswered points to take the set. The second set was similar with the two squads battling to a 14-14 draw. The Foresters then opened the second set with an 8-4 advantage before the Sabres went on an 8-1 run to take a 12-9 advantage. This lead wouldn't hold leading to a 14-14 tie before another 4-0 run from the Sabres saw Marian retake the lead. Similarly, LFC was able to battle back and tie the set at 19-19. The third time proved to be the charm for the Sabres as Marian would manage to even the sets with a 5-2 run.
The third set opened with a 13-13 tie before a stretch of five unanswered points by Marian saw the Sabres take an 18-13 advantage. The Foresters managed to cut the deficit down to three, but this set wouldn't be like the second. Marian would manage to put together another strong finish going on a 6-2 run to take a 2-1 advantage. Looking to end the match in four, Marian jumped out to a 12-9 lead to open the fourth. LFC managed to rattle off 7-1 run to take a 16-13 edge. Marian was able to immediately respond with a 6-1 spurt to take a 19-17 advantage. This led to another tight finish with the two teams finding themselves tied 22-22, but Marian once again had a strong end and closed out the match scoring three of the final four points.
Junior Kaitlyn Merrill paced the offense with 14 kills, while freshman Harley Bartels had her second double-digit kill performance as a Sabre with 12 kills off of a .478 hitting percentage. Junior Serina Pehowski filled up the stat sheet with eight kills, five service aces, and two blocks, while senior Andrea Miller led the back row with a match-high 25 kills.
