FOND DU LAC - A tough second period lifted UW-Stevens Point past Marian University women's hockey (0-1-1, 0-0-0-0 NCHA) by a 3-1 final.
Both offenses struggled to get started as there were only five shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes of the game between the two squads. One of those shots was a UWSP goal at the 7:12 mark. The Sabres didn't let this lead last long, however, as at the 11:11 mark junior
Hannah Cunha would score her first goal of the season with an assist from freshman
Allie Kieffer. This lead held into the first intermission with each team recording eight shots on goal.
A tough 20-second stretch in the second period proved to be the difference as the Pointers would score at the 4:05 and 4:25 mark. Marian was able to outshoot UWSP 9-5 in the final period but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Sabres were outshot by a slim 25-23 margin with Cunha finishing with a game-high five shots. In the first start of her career, sophomore
Abby Okon made 22 saves with 10 of her stops coming in the second period.
Marian takes the weekend off before traveling to Adrian to open NCHA play Saturday, Nov. 12 at 6:30 p.m. (CST).
