SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - Marian University ACHA D3 (3-5-0) earned its first sweep of the season defeating Lake Superior State 9-1 and 8-5.
Serge Simard would record a hat trick in the first game of the series which was all Sabres. Simard opened the scoring before Logan Drolet and
Kaden Hansen lit the lamp as Marian built a 3-0 lead going into the second. The Sabres were able to add four goals in the second with
Connor Bending opening the scoring followed by Drolet, Hansen, and Simard all scoring their second goals of the game.Â
Alex Lindeman scored just nine seconds into the final period to build an 8-0 lead for Marian before the Lakers were able to end the shutout. A power-play goal from Simard with just 4:52 left to play capped off the scoring and a hat trick. Simard finished the game with five points as he also had a pair of assists. Sam Gasienca earned the win between the pipes for the Sabres, shots were not kept in the box score.
The Sabre offense continued to roll in game two of the series and Marian was able to hold off a late rally to secure the sweep. Hansen and Jackson Sweeney built a 2-0 lead for Marian in the first period only to have LSSU open the scoring in the second. Marian then scored four unanswered goals in a span of 2:27 to build a 6-1 advantage. Hansen netted his second of the game before Simard and
Alex Lindeman each scored. Simard closed out the spurt with a power-play score. After a Laker goal with just 40 seconds remaining, Simard netted his second hat trick in as many days to give Marian a 7-2 lead going into the third. Bending would find the back of the net for the Sabres and the Lakers would score three times to put the final at 8-5. Amanda Sincere was the winner in goal for Marian with shots not recorded in the box score.
Marian travels to UW-Platteville Nov. 18-19 for another pair of road games.
