Britton heroics lift Marian men's basketball past SNC

DE PERE, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (3-3, 3-0 NACC) hit 15 three-pointers to defeat St. Norbert 68-64 on the road.

  • The Sabres were able to get out to a hot start scoring 11 of the first 13 points in the first 4:30 of the game.  
  • Marian was able to bring its lead out to 26-15 with 6:25 left in the half.
  • St. Norbert then put together its first significant run of the game using a 16-4 run to take a 31-30 lead into halftime.
  • The Green Knights continued to use their momentum opening the second half with a 10-4 spurt to go ahead 41-34 with 15:58 left in the game.
  • After SNC took a 53-45 lead with 9:04 to play, their largest lead of the game, Marian was able to rally.
  • The Sabres were able to go on a 12-3 run capped off by a three-pointer from senior Tyler Gouin to retake the lead at 57-56 with 5:29 left in the game.
  • Neither team would manage a lead larger than four points for the remainder of the game. 
  • A three-pointer from the Green Knights with 1:44 left to play broke a 61-61 tie, but Marian would score seven unanswered points to close out the game and seal the comeback win.
  • Senior David Britton hit a go ahead three-pointer with just 20 seconds left, and a missed layup from SNC in the final seconds allowed senior Charlie Mendys to ice the game with a pair of free throws.

  • The win marks the first time Marian has beaten St. Norbert since Jan. 5, 1993.
  • The Sabres shot 23-of-46 (.500) from the field and 15-of-26 (.577) from beyond the arc.  The Marian defense held SNC to 22-of-56 shooting (.393) and 5-of-19 (.263) shooting from three-point land.
  • The Sabres lost the turnover battle by a slim 10-9 margin but outscored the Green Knights 15-9 in points off turnovers.
  • St. Norbert dominated in the paint outscoring Marian 30-8.

Senior David Britton had his best game of the season shooting 10-of-17 (.588) from the field and 6-of-9 (.667) from beyond the arc for a season-best 29 points. Britton also had six assists and two blocks.
Senior Charlie Mendys played just eight minutes but hit all three three-pointers he attempted finishing the game with 12 points off the bench.
Senior Josh Nicklaus finished with 11 points after shooting 3-of-5 (.600) from beyond the arc with five rebounds.
Senior Tyler Gouin attempted just two shots but finished with eight assists and four rebounds.
