Box Score FOND DU LAC - Marian University men's volleyball (17-4, 3-2 NACC) took the opening set but fell to No. 3 Dominican 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, and 25-17.
The Sabres jumped out to an early 9-6 lead to open the match only to see the Stars rally and take an 11-10 advantage. Marian was able to respond, however, going on a 9-3 to take a 19-14 advantage and force a Dominican timeout. A quick 5-2 spurt at the end of the set helped the Sabres secure the opening stanza. The two squads opened the second tied at 10-10 and traded points until a quick 4-0 spurt from Marian put the Sabres ahead 19-17. The set was then tied at 21-21 late before Dominican scored the final four points to even the sets.
The third set saw the Dominican offense take over as the Stars opened with a slim 11-7 advantage drawing a Marian timeout. The Stars were then able to close out the set with an 8-2 run. A similar fast start in the fourth had Dominican go ahead 12-7 before four unanswered points saw the Stars pull ahead and hold off a Sabre rally.
Sophomore Derek Wills had a big match leading the Marian offense with 14 kills off of a .310 hitting percentage. Senior Zach Zelenik posted a team-high six digs to go wtih 31 assists and a service ace.
Marian closes out the weekend hosting Concordia Chicago tomorrow, Saturday, March 5, at 5 p.m.
