Box Score FOND DU LAC - Marian University men's volleyball (19-4, 5-2 NACC) handed MSOE their first NACC loss defeating the Raiders 25-14, 25-19, and 29-27.
The Sabres jumped all over the Raiders opening the first set with a 15-7 lead highlighted by a 9-2 run. This forced a Raider timeout but the Sabres were able to cruise to the set win and closed it out scoring four of the final five points. The second set opened tighter with Marian taking a slim 13-12 lead. From there, Marian went on an 8-1 run to take a 21-14 advantage and force an MSOE timeout. The Raiders were able to build momentum at the end of the set scoring three straight points, but Marian would eventually end the set at 25-19.
MSOE was able to use their momentum from the end of the second to open with a 10-3 lead in the third set. The Raiders brought this lead out to 21-13 before Marian began to rally. The Sabres would go on a 7-3 spurt but the Raiders still found themselves ahead 24-20. Marian didn't back down from the deficit turning away all four set-point opportunities to tie the set at 24-24. After turning away two more set-point opportunities, Marian and MSOE were tied at 27-27. Senior Zach Zelenik and Liam Skinner put the match away recording two blocks in a row to complete the sweep and comeback.
The Marian defense finished with 11 blocks and a disciplined back row held the Raiders to a .076 hitting percentage for the match. Skinner had a solo block to go with five assisted blocks, while Zelenik had five assisted blocks. Sophomore Derek Wills paced the offense with 10 kills and only one error, while sophomore Aaron Velasco had a match-high 12 digs.
Marian takes a week off traveling to Lakeland Wednesday, March 16 for a 7 p.m. first serve.
