Marian softball opens busy week with sweep of CUC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University softball (13-16, 8-10 NACC) defeated Concordia Chicago 4-2 and 6-5 at home to open a stretch of eight games in five days.

Pitching dominated to open the first game with a single from sophomore Evelynn Spaeth opening up a 2-0 Marian lead in the third.  The Cougars immediately responded scoring a pair of runs in the next half inning to tie the game.  Marian was able to take the lead for good taking advantage of an error in the fifth.  Sophomore Haley Tice then got caught up in a rundown long enough for Spaeth to score and set the final at 4-2.

Freshman Kerena Wood had the only multi-hit game between the two teams going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Junior Emalee Depa (9-7) earned a complete-game win allowing just one earned run and five hits.

Game two saw the two squads combine for six runs in the first inning.  The Cougars opened with four runs in its half of the first.  Spaeth then drove in a run and scored on a wild pitch to put Marian down 4-2 after one inning.  The Cougars were able to build a 5-2 lead with a run in the fifth before Marian rallied.

Wood opened the comeback with a deep two-run home run to left center field to cut the Marian deficit down to one.  Junior Andrea Miller then provided a two-out pinch-hit single that plated a pair of runs.  The Cougars were able to load the bases with just one out in the top of the sixth but Depa would come out of the bullpen to shut down CUC.

Wood once again led the offense going 3-for-4 with two runs driven in and two runs scored.  Senior Cailie Pliner (4-4) earned the win allowing just one run over 2.0 innings of work, while Depa tossed the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit to earn her second save of the season.

Marian travels to No. 16 MSOE Thursday, April 28 for a 3 p.m. NACC doubleheader.
