Sabre softball rallies for split with SNC in home finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC - Marian University softball (15-18, 10-12 NACC) was defeated by St. Norbert 8-7 before defeating the Green Knights 3-2 in the final home games of the season.

Marian was able to take advantage of three errors in the first inning to build an early 3-0 lead.  The Green Knights were able to chip away and eventually take a one-run lead in the fifth.  This lead was short lived as sophomore Evelynn Spaeth and senior Melanie Weigel were able to drive in runs the next half inning to put the Sabres up 5-4.  Marian had St. Norbert down to its final strike but a home run would tie the game.  The Green Knights added on three more runs to take an 8-5 advantage.  Spaeth responded with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame, the first of her career, but Marian was unable to force extras.

Sophomore Katelyn Matenaer and freshman Kerena Wood each had multi-hit games with Wood scoring three runs.  Spaeth also finished with three runs driven in and two runs scored.

A pitching duel opened up in game two after each team scored a run in the first inning.  Weigel drove in a run with a single to open the scoring for the Sabres.  The tie stood until the fourth when Matenaer hit a double to put the Sabres ahead 2-1.  The next half inning saw SNC tie the game at 2-2 but the Sabres quickly retook the lead.  Freshman Alivia Ernst was able to give Marian the lead for good with a single in the bottom of the fifth that plated a run.

Junior Laney Spradlin (1-0) earned the first victory of her career in the circle, while freshman Kaitlyn Van De Hey earned the first save of her career.  Matenaer and Weigel each had multi-hit efforts where Matenaer went 2-for-4 with a run driven in and run scored.
