Men's Basketball

#1 - Men's Basketball Runs the Table for NACC Tournament Championship

History was made as Marian University men's basketball reached the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in program history after winning its second NACC Tournament Championship.

Marian started the season strong going 3-1 in non-conference action with the lone defeat coming to No. 15 UW-La Crosse.  The first test of adversity saw Marian drop th first three games of NACC play.  A strong finish to the first half followed with the Sabres defeating Concordia Chicago behind a late three-pointer from sophomore Ben Basten and a road victory over Cardinal Stritch.

This helped lead the Sabres to an 11-3 record to open the second half and a chance to earn a regular season championship with wins over Rockford at home and Lakeland on the road to conclude the regular season.  The Regents would earn a season sweep of the Sabres, however, defeating the Marian and ending the thoughts of a conference title.

Marian was once again able to immediately bounce back in a big way defeating Lakeland on the road 105-79 marking the third time on the season Marian reached 100 points.  This gave Marian the No. 5 seed for the NACC Tournament and a chance to host a conference tournament game for the first time since 2014.  Aurora gave the Sabres a scare in the opening round but a late three-pointer from sophomore Delvin Barnstable lifted Marian past Aurora in overtime.

The Sabres then made a little NACC history to claim the NACC Tournament Championship becoming just the second team in the history of the conference to win three road games in the tournament.  The opener was a blowout victory for Marian as junior Tyler Gouin went for 29 points to lead the Sabres past Illinois Tech.  A defensive battle ensued in the semifinals with Marian holding Concordia Chicago to 35.7-percent shooting from the field to earn a tight three-point victory.  In the championship game, Marian had to travel to three-seed Concordia Wisconsin, an arena the Sabres had previously won at during the regular season.  Behind strong performances from senior David Britton and Gouin, Marian would hold on late to earn a 77-71 victory.

The NCAA Tournament had Marian headed to a WIAC opponent for the second time as the Sabres were pitted against No. 5 UW-Platteville.  The Sabres were able to hang tight with the Pioneers trailing UWP just 36-34 heading into halftime.  A tough second half from beyond the arc proved to be too much for the Sabres to overcome falling 76-59.

Britton led the way for the Sabres in postseason honors most notably earning All-District Second Team honors from the NABC and All-Region Third Team recognition from D3hoops.com  He would also earn All-NACC First Team recognition and was joined by Barnstable who was a second-team selection.

Marian finished the year 19-9, tied for the third-most wins in a single season in program history, marking the first winning season since 2015-16.  The Sabres had an especially dominant season from beyond the arc hitting 293 three-pointers, easily a single-season program record.  As a team, the Sabres also set a program record for free-throw percentage and recorded 112 blocks marking just the third time in program history a team reached the 100-block plateau.
