Box Score FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's soccer (1-2-0, 0-0-0 NACC) put together a solid rally late but fell to Lawrence 3-2 at home.
The Sabres opened the scoring when a free kick entered the middle of the box and was headed in by a Lawrence defender. The own goal came at the 17:13 mark. This lead didn't last long, however, as the Vikings found the back of the net at the 20:05 mark. Both defenses played well in the opening half with Marian outshooting Lawrence by a slim 5-2 margin.
Lawrence was able to take its first lead of the game 13:16 into the second half taking advantage of a costly turnover. The lead was extended to 3-1 just 7:09 later with the Vikings scoring on a free kick.
The momentum shifted at the 66:05 mark when freshman
Chelsea King was able to turn away a penalty shot. Senior
Ashley Welk forced a turnover off of a Lawrence goal kick just 3:35 later and did a nifty spin move in the middle of the box to create enough space to send a shot that beat the keeper under the crossbar. The goal was her first of the season and came exactly at the 69:00 mark. Â
The Sabres created several quality opportunities to find the equalizer, but freshman
Brianna Guelig would hit the post on a cross and a Marian goal was brought back due to an offsides call.
Marian outshot the Vikings 7-0 following the save on the penalty kick and finished the game with a 14-8 edge for the game. Welk led the Sabres with seven shots with four of her attempts being on frame. King (1-1-0) finished the game with four saves.
Marian takes on UW-Oshkosh Sunday, Sept. 11 for a noon kick-off in non-conference action.
