Marian men's basketball overcomes slow start to beat Rockford

FOND DU LAC - Marian University men's basketball (8-6, 6-2 NACC) trailed by as many as 12 points but came back to beat Rockford 75-71.

  • The two sides couldn't miss in the opening minutes leading to an 11-11 tie.
  • Rockford took the first big lead of the game going on a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead with 12:19 left in the opening half.
  • Marian was able to chip away at the Regent lead and a 10-2 run later in the half saw Marian take a 36-34 lead with 6:05 left in the half.
  • The remainder of the half was all Rockford as the Regents went on a 13-3 run to take a 47-39 lead into the half.  The Regents closed out the half with eight unanswered points.
  • Rockford opened the second half building its lead to 12 at 57-45 with 16:55 left to play.
  • The Sabres were once again able to battle back and with a 15-2 retook the lead at 60-59 with 9:26 left.
  • From there, the two squads traded the lead back-and-forth leading to a 67-67 tie and 4:34 on the clock.
  • Marian was able to complete the come from behind effort closing the game with an 8-4 advantage.

  • Marian shot 26-of-55 (.473) for the game and went 8-of-21 (.381) from beyond the arc.
  • The Sabre defense held Rockford to 8-of-25 (.320) shooting in the second half with the Regents missing all nine three-point attempts.
  • Marian was able to outscore the Regents 15-10 in points off turnovers.
  • The Regents held a 28-20 edge in points in the paint and 20-7 advantage for second-chance points.

Senior Tyler Gouin had another strong performance scoring a game-high 20 points with seven assists and two steals. Senior David Britton hit four three-pointers finishing with 19 points, three assists, and three steals. Senior Josh Nicklaus scored 11 points grabbing seven rebounds with four assists and three steals.
