Marian NCAA men's hockey defeats No. 9 St. Norbert in shootout

DE PERE, Wis. - Marian University NCAA men's hockey (6-10-2, 1-6-4-0 NCHA) rallied to tie No. 9 St. Norbert 4-4 before earning an extra point with a 1-0 shootout win.

  • The Sabres were able to strike first after fighting off a 5-on-3 penalty kill with sophomore Jaymes Knee scoring his eighth of the season.  He was assisted by sophomore Daunte Fortner and senior Nolan Kadachuk.
  • The Green Knights were able to answer with just 1:02 left in the period to tie the game going into the second period.
  • St. Norbert then took a two goal lead to open the second period scoring at the 8:22 and 15:22 marks.
  • Sophomore Nick Cherkowski was able to trim the Marian deficit with a power-play score, his sixth goal of the season, with just 1:09 on the clock.  Knee and sophomore Jordan Simoneau each earned assists.
  • The Green Knights quickly responded putting the game at 4-2 just 2:30 into the final period with a power-play score.
  • The Marian comeback began at the 7:28 mark with sophomore Jack Sampson scoring his fifth of the year, assist to Fortner.
  • A power-play score from Knee then tied the game at the 8:27 mark, assists from Simoneau and freshman Noah Pickart.
  • After a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime session, Knee scored the lone shootout goal to give Marian two points.

  • The Sabres improved to 4-0 in NCHA games where they go to overtime or a shootout.
  • Marian was outshot 47-32 for the game but had double-digit shots in the final two periods.
  • Marian went 2-for-3 on the power play, while St. Norbert was 1-for-4 on the power play.

Sophomore Jaymes Knee scored a pair of goals with an assist and scored the lone shootout goal.  It was his second straight multi-point effort. Senior Colby Muise (6-8-2) tied a season-high with 43 saves and didn't allow a goal in the shootout. Sophomore Jordan Simoneau had a pair of assists with one of his helpers coming on the game-tying goal.
