Marian NCAA men's hockey finishes four-point weekend against No. 5 Aurora

FOND DU LAC - Marian University NCAA men's hockey (8-11-2, 3-6-4-1 NCHA) scored three goals in the third period to defeat No. 5 Aurora.

  • The Spartans were able to get out to a fast start for a second straight game scoring just 5:24 in to take a 1-0 lead.
  • This lead held going into the third period after a scoreless second period.
  • With just two seconds left on a power play, sophomore Daunte Fortner scored his sixth goal of the season just 2:19 into the final period with an assist to senior Blake Kleiner.
  • Junior Mason Richey then gave Marian its first lead of the series scoring with just 6:58 left to play.  Sophomores Nick Cherkowski and Adam Nobes each earned an assist.
  • Richey then iced the game with an empty-net goal in the final minute with assists to junior Ty Mosimann and senior Colby Muise.

  • Marian and Aurora each had 33 shots in the game with another strong finish seeing Marian outshoot the Spartans 11-9 in the final stanza.
  • The Sabres converted one of their three power-play opportunities, while the Spartans were held scoreless on two chances.
  • Marian won just 23 faceoffs and the Spartans had 44 faceoff victories.
  • The win improves Marian to 3-2-1 in games against nationally-ranked opponents with just one loss coming in regulation.

Senior Colby Muise (8-9-2) stopped the final 27 shots he saw finishing the game with 32 saves.  He also recorded his second career assist. Sophomore Mason Richey scored his first two goals of the season. Sophomore Daunte Fortner scored a game-tying goal for the second straight night.
