Derek Wills of Marian University men's volleyball has been named Academic All-District by the organization College Sports Communicators.
The Academic All-America program run by CSC is considered one of the most prestigious awards as it is one of the few awards that combines academics and athletics. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average at their current institution. The student-athlete must also be at least a sophomore and have been attending their current institution for a full calendar year.Â
Wills (Dubuque, Iowa) earned his third All-NACC award while studying history with a 3.89 grade point average. He finished the season as the top attacker for the Sabres and earned two NACC Player of the Week awards during the year. Wills finished the regular season fifth in the NACC with 3.17 kills per set and seventh in the conference with 3.60 points per set. He had double-digit kills in 12 matches this season and saved his best performances of the season for the final two matches recording 20 kills against Benedictine and 21 kills against Illinois Tech. He also had double-digit digs in four matches this season with three double-doubles. Through three seasons, Wills is third on the all-time kills list with 787 and points list at 910.0. He is also fifth all-time for service aces with 62.
