Tews scores late to lead Marian NCAA men's hockey past Dubuque

FOND DU LAC - Marian University NCAA men's ice hockey (4-2-0, 1-1-1-1 NCHA) only led for 1:38 of the game but defeated Dubuque 5-3.

  • The Spartans were able to open the scoring 8:17 into the first period, the only score of the first period.
  • It took the Sabres just 15 seconds into the second period when sophomore Caden Carlson scored with assists from fellow sophomore Cole Carlson and freshman Brady Brenner.
  • The Spartans retook the lead taking advantage of a Marian major penalty scoring at the 8:20 mark.
  • On the same major penalty, Marian was able to tie the game with a short-handed goal just 1:06 later.
  • Sophomore Quinn Mulder lit the lamp for the Sabres with helpers from sophomore Nolan Flint and freshman Lucas Jeffreys.
  • The tie was broken once again by Dubuque with 7:22 left in the period.
  • Junior Alex Enegren had the answer this time just 1:25 later with assists from freshmen Brady Brenner and Brendan Bottom.
  • The 3-3 tie held going into the final period and for most of the third period.
  • Freshman Dayne Tews picked a perfect time to net his first collegiate goal giving Marian its first lead with 1:38 left on the clock.
  • Junior Noah Pickart assisted the goal after managing to battle through two defenders and get the puck below the goal line before a centering pass.
  • Carlson, Cole capped off the win scoring an empty-net goal with just 7.7 ticks remaining, assist to Enegren.

  • Marian outshot Dubuque 12-6 in the final period but were outshot for the game 35-32.
  • The Sabre penalty-kill unit allowed one goal on four chances with the goal coming on a major penalty.
  • Marian had just one chance on the power play and were unable to find the back of the net.
  • The Spartans held a slim 38-34 advantage in face-offs.

Freshman Dayne Tews scored the game-winning goal with his first collegiate score.
Freshman Brady Brenner had a pair of assists, the first points of his collegiate career.
Freshman Tyler Fromolz (2-1-0) only played in the third period but stopped all six shots he faced to earn the win.
