Marian women's basketball escapes with win at Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - Marian University women's basketball (2-3, 0-0 NACC) used a late free throw from senior Lexi Brakebush to defeat Beloit 51-50.

  • Marian scored the first eight points of the game and led by as much as 15 in the opening stanza.
  • The Sabres were able to head into the first stoppage of action with a 20-6 advantage.
  • A strong start to the second quarter helped the Buccaneers cut their deficit down to 28-20 going into halftime.
  • Marian was able to build its lead back to double-digits at 11 points with 5:28 left in the third quarter.
  • After BC responded with seven unanswered points, a quick three-pointer and layup from the Sabres gave MU a 44-35 lead going into the final 10 minutes.
  • The Sabre offense went cold as Beloit used an 11-3 run to only trail 47-46 with 1:02 to play.
  • A three-pointer with six seconds saw the Buccaneers tie the game at 50-50.
  • After a Sabre timeout and advancement, senior Lexi Brakebush was able to draw a foul with four ticks left and went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give Marian a lead.
  • A late desperation three-pointer from the Buccaneers would be off line to give Marian its second straight win.

  • Beloit finished 18-of-60 (.300) and 9-of-34 (.265) on three-pointers.

Senior Lexi Brakebush had a game-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds and two steals.  She also went 4-of-5 (.800) on three-point attempts.
Junior Chelsea King chipped in 14 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Senior Lyla Bartol had six points with just as many rebounds.
