Sabre softball walks off Heidelberg to salvage split

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Marian University softball (4-2, 0-0 NACC) was able to earn a walk-off 11-10 win over Heidelberg after falling to Nebraska Wesleyan 9-6.

GAME 1 (NEBRASKA WESLEYAN - L, 9-6)
  • Nebraska Wesleyan was able to jump out to an early lead with a late Marian rally falling just short.
  • The Prairie Wolves were able to score the first seven runs of the game and led 7-0 after five innings of action.
  • Marian showed life in the top of the sixth after sophomores Riley Mankowski and Sofia Cerullo drove in a run each.
  • NWU was able to quickly respond in the bottom half with two of their own to lead 9-2 going into the final inning.
  • Marian wouldn't go away quietly, however, managing four runs in the seventh inning.
  • Freshman Erin Cowe opened the rally with a double that brought in a run and was followed by a run-producing single from senior Katelyn Matenaer.
  • Marian was able to bring the tying run to the plate before the Prairie Wolves held off the late push.
GAME 2 (HEIDELBERG - W, 11-10 [8])
  • Marian was able to use the strong finish to game one scoring seven runs in the first three innings of game two.
  • Cowe opened the scoring when she brought in a run in the first followed by three Sabre runs in the second and third.
  • Sophomore Alexa Paulsberg would bring in a run in each inning with a double as Marian led 7-1 after three innings.
  • Heidelberg answered with three in the fifth to cut their deficit down to three, but another run driven in from Paulsberg quickly put Marian back ahead 8-4.
  • Another three-run frame put Heidelberg behind just one run in the sixth before they were able to force extras with a run in the seventh.
  • With all of the momentum, Heidelberg was able to strike in the eighth scoring a pair of runs.
  • Marian was able to show resiliency as Matenaer would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth with a double.
  • After two intentional walks, junior Kendall Pliner would bring in Matenaer for the walk-off victory.

Sophomore Hope Matta went 2-for-4 with a run scored at the top of the lineup.
Sophomore Riley Mankowski drove in two runs after going 1-for-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Senior Katelyn Matenaer went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one run driven in.

GAME 2 
Freshman Savanna Knuth went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a run driven in.
Sophomore Alexa Paulsberg finished 2-for-3 with three runs driven in and a run scored.
Senior Katelyn Matenaer was 3-for-5 with two runs driven in and scored the game-winning run.
