Five unanswered goals lifts Marian field hockey past Earlham

FOND DU LAC - Marian University field hockey (2-0, 0-0 CFHC) allowed the first goal but went on to score five unanswered goals in a 5-1 win over Earlham.

  • Another slow start saw Marian outshoot Earlham but neither team could find the scoreboard.
  • Earlham opened the scoring just 3:58 into the second on what would be their only shot on goal for the game.
  • Junior Allyson Nichols quickly responded on a breakaway at the 22:19 mark tying the game with an assist from fellow junior Jikke Biemans.
  • Then with 2:00 left on the clock, junior Merel Nagelkerke would receive a penalty corner insertion and bury a shot from the top of the arc to put Marian ahead 2-1 going into halftime.  Freshman Laura Bos earned an assist on the play.
  • Another penalty corner score opened the third quarter as sophomore Angelene Castro found enough space 2:56 into the second period to score, assist to Biemans.
  • Biemans netted her first goal of the game just 1:34 later with Nichols earning an assist.
  • The same duo teamed up one more time with just 3:25 left in the game to put the final at 5-1.

  • Marian finished with a 17-4 edge in shots and 11-1 advantage for shots on goal.
  • The Sabre defense didn't allow a single Quaker shot in the second half.
  • Earlham also didn't have any penalty corners, while Marian netted a pair of goals on six chances.
  • Marian held a 50-35 advantage for fouls.
  • The Sabres improve to 4-0 all-time against Earlham and have won all four match-ups by multiple goals.
  • Marian has started 2-0 in all three seasons of its existence.
