Strong finish not enough as Sabre women's basketball falls in opener

FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's basketball (0-1, 0-0 NACC) opened its season with a 74-67 loss to Dubuque.

  • Dubuque jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before freshman Holly Goodwin began the scoring for Marian with 6:16 left in the first quarter.
  • The Spartans started to pull away in the second, with an Ella Gabbert three-pointer making it a 16 point lead midway through the quarter. 
  • Marian fought back, with senior Chelsea King making three-straight buckets to eventually get the deficit down to four going into halftime. 
  • Dubuque controlled the third quarter, holding a 23-12 advantage in the quarter. The Sabres went about five minutes without scoring, before sophomore Taycee Schwanke sparked some life with a three-pointer with 4:12 left. 
  • The Sabres went on an electrifying run in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Spartans 21-13.
  • Marian brought it within five, with a layup from sophomore Nyedeng Awak making it 72-67 with 23 seconds left. It was just too little too late, with the Spartans sealing the win at the line to leave with the victory.

  • The Spartans had 13 offensive rebounds, leading to 19 second chance points for Dubuque. In comparison, the Sabres had six offensive rebounds and four second chance points. 
  • Marian held 38-28 advantage in points in the paint, with 18 of those coming in their dominant fourth quarter. 
  • The Sabres went a perfect 7-7 from the line for the game, but had two quarters without shooting a free throw. 
  • Marian 's bench unit had a strong showing with King and Schwanke both scoring double figures and giving the Sabres a 29-25 bench points advantage.

Sophomore Taycee Schwanke had an efficient 13 points and six rebounds, while shooting 3-6 from behind the arc. 
Junior Taj Hanserd recorded 10 points and six rebounds, while shooting a perfect 3-3 from the line.
