Marian men's lacrosse wins NACC opener in triple overtime

FOND DU LAC - In the longest game in Sabre men's lacrosse history, Marian University men's lacrosse (2-2, 1-0 NACC) defeated Cornell 10-9 in triple overtime to open NACC play.

  • Each side only managed one goal in the first quarter with the Sabre score coming from senior Trevor Stachowski.
  • The second quarter was similar with each side scoring once and the Marian goal coming from senior Serge Simard with just seven seconds remaining before the half.
  • The Sabres had a strong start to the second half scoring the first two goals, but the Rams responded with two straight as well.
  • A pair of goals from freshman Bennett Luke helped propel Marian to a 7-5 lead going into the fourth quarter.
  • The Rams cut their deficit to one before Simard and Stachowski put Marian ahead 9-6 with 12:45 to play.
  • Two quick goals from Cornell put the Rams behind one with 8:07 to play.
  • Cornell was then able to force overtime netting a goal with 59 ticks remaining.
  • There were only two shots on goal between the first two overtimes before Stachowski netted the game-winner with just 45 seconds left in triple overtime.

  • Marian held a 39-36 edge for shots in the victory.
  • The Rams were only 22-of-34 (.647) on clears, while Marian finished just 31-for-45 (.689).
  • Each squad had 58 ground balls, and the Rams won 19 of the 24 face offs.
  • Marian allowed one man-up goal on three chances, while the Rams committed zero penalties.
  • The Sabres are now 2-1 all-time in overtime with this being the first overtime game since 2019.

Sophomore Jayden Gerhardt set a single-game record with 10 caused turnovers and had 14 ground balls.
Senior Serge Simard led the Marian offense scoring four goals with four assists and grabbing 10 ground balls.
Junior Jackson Sweeney (2-2) finished with 11 saves on 20 shots.
