Marian baseball sweeps Benedictine with pair of offensive outbreaks

FOND DU LAC - Marian University baseball (17-18, 11-9 NACC) inched closer to a spot in the NACC Tournament defeating Benedictine 14-13 and 13-9 at home.

GAME 1
  • The Eagles took an early lead scoring a run in the first and two in the third.
  • A patient approach at the plate in the bottom of the third saw Marian score five runs highlighted by a double from sophomore Marc Jones that scored three runs.
  • The Marian lead lasted until the fifth when Benedictine scored four runs in the fifth to lead 7-5.
  • The Sabres immediately erased their deficit using singles from senior Ryan Nelson and Jones in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game at 7-7.
  • Benedictine retook the lead in the seventh with a four-run frame.
  • Just like the fifth, Marian immediately responded taking advantage of an error in the bottom half to tie the game at 11-11.
  • Seniro James Bornick hit a two-run homer to seal the frame, his sixth of the season.
  • The back-and-forth affair continued with the Eagles scoring two runs in the top of the eighth.
  • Marian was able to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth with graduate student Robbie Knorr and senior Jacob Kleemann driving in runs.
  • Sophomore Keon Booker then clinched the walk-off win with an infield single with two outs to plate Knorr.
GAME 2
  • The consistent offense continued with Benedictine leading 5-2 going into the bottom of the fourth.
  • From the fourth inning to the seventh inning Marian was then able to take a commanding lead scoring 11 unanswered runs.
  • The Sabres put together a crooked number in the fifth inning scoring seven runs despite not recording a hit.
  • The Eagles made things interesting scoring a run in the eighth and three runs in the ninth.
  • Benedictine was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth but Marian was able to hold off the rally and earn the sweep.
  • The Sabres are now 15-28 all-time against Benedictine.
  • Marian has a magic number of just two to clinch a spot in the NACC Tournament.

Sophomore Marc Jones had a five-hit game in the opener finishing the day with six hits, two runs scored, and four runs driven in.
Graduate student Robbie Knorr went 5-for-10 on the day with five runs scored and two driven in.
Sophomore Carson McLean (1-0) earned the first win of his career going 3.2 innings in game two with three strikeouts.
