#9Â - Men's Lacrosse Defeats Cornell in Triple Overtime
In the longest game in program history, through the wind, rain, hail, and everything in between, Marian University men's lacrosse was able to open NACC play with a 10-9 victory over Cornell that needed three overtimes to settle.
A quiet opening first half saw the two sides go into halftime knotted at 2-2 with seniors
Trevor Stachowski and
Serge Simard finding the back of the net for the Sabres. After bringing the tally out to a 4-4 draw, freshman Bennett Luke scored back-to-back goals to propel Marian to a 7-5 lead going into the fourth quarter. Cornell opened the scoring for the fourth quarter, but goals from Simard and Stachowski put Marian ahead 9-6 with 12:45 left to play.
Two quick goals from the Rams put Cornell down by just one with 8:07 on the clock. The Rams eventually netted the tying goal with 59 ticks left to play. A defensive battle ensued over the first two overtimes with only two shots on goal in total. Stachowski then sent the Sabre faithful home happy scoring with 45 seconds left in the third overtime.
Sophomore
Jayden Gerhardt set a single-game Marian record in the win with 10 caused turnovers and he also had 14 ground balls. Simard had a hand in eight of the nine Marian goals scoring four times with just as many helpers.
