Marian ACHA D2 earns first wins sweeping Marquette

BROOKFIELD, Wis. / FOND DU LAC - Marian University ACHA D2 hockey (2-2-0, 2-2-0 NCHL) earned its first wins of the season defeating Marquette 6-4 and 9-3.

GAME 1 (AWAY, W, 6-4)
  • The opening period saw late scoring as Anthony O'Neal started teh scoring with 3:40 left in the period.
  • Marquette netted an equalizer with 1:06 left in the period to send the two squads into the first intermission tied.
  • Kyyan Jahner helped give Marian the lead just 3:17 into the second period with help from Blake Stafford.
  • The Golden Eagles then netted the next two goals to take their first lead of the game.
  • Marian was able to knot things up heading into the third when O'Neal scored his second goal of the game with just 1:37 left in the period.
  • Stafford broke the dead lock just 1:54 into the final period, but once again, Marquette knotted the score shortly after at 4-4.
  • Marian took the lead for good with 4:04 left in regulation with a goal from Chris Regan.
  • Brandon Fain scored a power-play goal with only 15 seconds left to give Marian extra cushion and put the final at 6-4.

GAME 2 (HOME, W, 9-3)
  •  The opening period of game two was similar to the entire game one as the two sides each scored a goal.
  • Cayden Frentte was the goal scorer for Marian and did so while Marian was short-handed.
  • The Sabres then dominated teh second period taking a 5-1 lead into the third.
  • Frenette scored his second special-teams goal of the game and Jackson Sweeney netted a pair in the period.
  • The two sides combined for six goals in the final period with four of them coming from Marian to put the final at 9-3.
  • Sweeney and Frenette each capped off hat tricks in the period with short-handed goals.

GAME 1
  • Marian had three power-play goals on five chances.
  • The Sabre penalty kill allowed just one goal on six Marquette opportunities.
GAME 2
  • Marquette finished with an edge in shots at a 44-36 clip.
  • The Sabre special teams scored two power-play goals and three short-handed goals.
  • Marian is now 13-3-3 all-time against Marquette with a 5-0-2 record over the last seven games.
